In Kampala: Iron Man 3 premiers at Oasis mall

What are film Premiers supposed to be for? In Hollywood and other places where films are actually made, it is all about seeing the actors and people who were part of the film. It is really a celebrity do. It could also be the first time that the public are actually getting to see a highly rated movie.

What about Uganda, what are Premieres for? We do not make films in Uganda, at least nothing to really write home about; and when a really big film gets here, many have already watched it on cheap pirated DVDs. So we can say it is a celebrity thing, Uganda celebrities, that is, which is not saying much.

So what was Tuesday’s Premiere of the film Iron Man 3 at Cineplex, oasis Mall all about? It definitely was not about the movie, which as supposed to start an hour after the cocktail (7pm), but had not started by the time people started leaving two hours later. For almost forty minutes the invited guests watched the same three trailers of upcoming movies, including, get this, Iron Man 3 itself. Considering most trailers are about 30 seconds long, it made for some really painful watching.

We understand the problem had to do with ‘re-winding’. Cineplex gets the movie it shows on giant reels, and it is safe to assume the distributor delivers films ready to be shown. So we suspect that somebody was watching the film during the afternoon, and didn’t get enough time to rewind the reels, hence the delay. But, whatever.

So the Premiere was really about drinking Redds Vodka Lemon, and it really seemed to go down, especially with the girls who were there in plenty. This drink is 7o, which is pretty strong for a beer. Remember Chairman’s ESB? It was 7o , not sure if it is being produced any longer. But the girls just loved it, and some carried about four bottles into the cinema.

Was there any celebrities? The debate whether there are actual celebrities in Uganda still goes on, but there were several well-known personalities, including musicians (Navio, Maurice Kirya, GNL Zamba), radio presenters (Fat Boy, Crystal Newman), and a couple of models (Viviene Mutesi and Mirelle Murungi).
